Motor Overload Protection

Motor Overload Protection

IEC & NEMA Enclosed & Single Phase Starters

Starters, sizes AF09-AF300 (AFN00-AFN4), have Class 10 adjustable thermal bimetallic overload relay protection as standard. Sizes AF400-AF750, have selectable Class 10, 20, 30 adjustable electronic overload relay protection as standard. Optional electronic overload relay protection is available for all starter sizes.

MSSP manual switches consist of a snap switch combined with a thermal overload device operating on the solder-ratchet principle. The switch is designed to prevent being held closed under a sustained motor overload. To reset the overload mechanism, the switch lever is moved to the OFF position. The motor can be restarted by pushing the switch lever to the ON position. Applications include compressors, fans and pumps.

Manual Motor Protectors

Manual motor protectors are electromechanical devices for motor and circuit protection. These devices offer local motor disconnect means, manual ON/OFF control, and protection against short circuit, overload, and phase loss conditions. Manual motor protection saves cost, panel space, and ensures quick and reliable short-circuit protection by reacting within milliseconds. Close coupling adaptors are available for combination with ABB contactors in various applications. ABB manual motor starters provide overload protection as required by Article 430 of the National Electrical Code.

The PSR softstarter is the most compact of all the softstarter ranges, thereby making it possible to design compact starting equipments.

Switched Mode Power Supplies

The CP-D range of power supply units in MDRC design (modular DIN rail components) fits into all domestic installation and distribution panels. The CP-E range offers enhanced functionality while the number of different types has been considerably reduced. Now all power supply units can be operated at an ambient temperature of up to +70 °C. The CP-T range of three-phase power supply units is ABB's youngest member of the power supply family. The CP-S range is ABB's standard range, a high-end power supply unit optimised for serial applications. The CP-C range's pluggable function modules adapt these power supply units exactly to your application's needs. Signal & Data Converters

ABB's range of analog signal converters are ideally suited when existing electrical or physical values have to be converted into proportional standard signals or relay threshold signals. The serial data converters from ABB allow the establishment of a communication between units with different communication standards.

In order to assure the process continuity, existing systems consistently have to be updated or connected to new devices. If the communication standard of the existing system and the connected device are different, serial data converters make the establishment of the communication possible. Besides the conversion of signals, analog signal converters and serial data converters are suited for the amplification, filtering or separation of analog signals.

Circuit Protection Devices

In order to ensure protection from transient surges, installation of surge protective devices (SPD) is a must. ABB has a long history of engineering and manufacturing quality surge protective devices.

Residual current devices, RCDs, provide ground fault equipment protection by monitoring the leakage of current to ground. The F200 series will trip when ground faults are detected in excess of the residual current trip rating of the device.

E90h fuseholders and E90 fuse disconnectors can be used in a variety of applications where electrical protection and isolation are required.

E210 series command devices are specifically made for commanding loads and signalling electrical conditions in any low-voltage switchboard. They are available in half module or 1 module, depending on the contact-layout. The devices with indicator lights are equipped with a LED, which grants an optimum illumination with very low consumption.

The switch family consists of switch-disconnectors from 16 to 3150 Amperes, switch fuses from 16 to 1250 Amperes, change-over switches from 16 to 2500 Amperes, automatic transfer switches from 160 to 1600 Amperes, cam switches from 10 to 315 Amperes, accessories, manual and motorized switches.

Pilot Devices

Contacts are equipped with a wiping action for high reliability. Contact carriers are colour coded to indicate normally open and normally closed contacts. Both built in LEDs and Pilot Lights with Ba9 sockets are available. Operators are available with black plastic or chrome metal bezels. In addition to traditional operators ABB also offers a wide range of special functions such as Machine stops, Extreme duty pushbuttons, Potentiometers and Reset buttons.

Modular Range operators and pilot lights meet protection degrees IP66 from the front side and IP20 on terminal side. The compact Range is a cost effective "all in one" alternative to traditional modular series in most applications.

Limit & Foot Switches

ABB plastic casing limit switches are made of reinforced UL-V0 thermoplastic fiberglass, offer double insulation and a degree of protection of IP 65 and UL Type 4. Metal casing limit switches are made of aluminum alloy and have a degree of protection of IP 66 and UL type 4X.

30mm limit switches for safety applications, conforming to the IEC/EN 60947-5-1, EN1088 and EN954-1 standards, are available with a red casing in three types: Latch key, Stainless steel rotative axis & Latch & manual reset range. Foot switches are used in machines such as: shearing machines, folding machines, spinning lathes, machine tools, wrapping machines, riveting presses, etc.

ABB wiring ducts are now also available in the 100 mm height and in a choice of six different base sizes (25, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 150 mm). These new wiring ducts join the established designs (with heights between 17 and 80 mm), bringing to 28 the total size combinations offered, all available with 8 - 12 mm and 4 - 6 mm slots. Flexible thermoplastic wiring ducts (available in seven sizes)are ideal for every situation in which wiring is subject to flexion or torsion.

Arc Guard Systems

TVOC-2, ABB's latest Arc Monitor, builds on the well known TVOC design. Its new functions and features improve an already great product, putting even more focus on reliability, flexibility and simplicity. Arc Guard System protects people and equipment, and eliminates unnecessary production stops. Arc monitor type TVOC-2 is ABB's state-of-the-art solution for arc fault protection in all applications, providing functional safety.

ABB's Arc Guard System consists of optical sensors, which respond to light caused by an arc inside a switchgear cabinet, connected to a monitoring unit with fiber optic cable. Up to 30 sensors can be connected to each monitoring unit.
