The concept is simple. One end of The Magnetic Coupling is a 5/8" or 3/8" diameter shaft that fits into the thru-bore encoder. The opposite end is a flat magnetic surface that attaches and holds to the end of the machine shaft to which you want to apply the encoder.

Here's how to install the Magnetic Coupling:

  • Simply position the coupling so it's centered on the shaft.
  • Attach the encoder to the magnetic coupling shaft.
  • Secure the anti-rotation tether arm and electrical connection and installation is complete.

Our Technical Bulletin No. 525 provides a more detailed description and a few tips regarding installation and removal of the Magnetic Coupling.

The magnetized face of the Magnetic Coupling has up to 100 lbs of breakaway force, so it's secure once installed. With through-bore encoders, exact centering is not usually needed due to the flexible anti-rotation mount. However, if more precise centering on the shaft is desired, the coupling has a pilot hole in the center of the magnetic face. Drill a pilot hole on the machine shaft, insert the included steel ball in the coupling and apply to the machine shaft. The coupling will center itself.

The Magnetic Coupling is available in two sizes to accommodate different sized encoders.

  • The larger (stock no. 176282-01) has a 5/8" diameter mounting shaft and is typically used with our Model 25T (2.5" dia. housing).
  • The smaller coupling (stock no. 176409-01) has a 3/8" diameter shaft and is typically used with our Model 260 (2.0" dia. housing).

Here are some of the ways our customers have used the Magnetic Coupling as a handy little problem solver:

  • Temporary installation Allows for use of an encoder for testing or calibration of equipment, with quick, easy installation and removal.
  • End-of-line systems (such as lot code printers, labelers, wrappers) on production lines. This is typical for OEM's or Integrators who arrive at a job site for an installation and need to apply equipment to an existing production line. It may be difficult to predetermine the shaft lengths and diameters where encoder feedback will be required.
  • Potential impact hazard With the coupling's magnetic break-away feature, even a brush with an errant fork lift may not necessarily spell the end for the encoder. If the encoder is moved off the machine shaft, it's quite possible the encoder can simply be repositioned.
  • Limited accessibility If encoder feedback is needed in a confined space, and drilling and tapping the machine shaft requires moving heavy equipment or disassembly, the Magnetic Coupling saves time and money.
  • Cost to drill and tap is not feasible Sometimes the commercial scope of an installation project may not support the expense of drilling, tapping and fabricating a stub shaft. Or, the shaft is on a high-value piece of equipment and drilling may void a warranty. Also, some shaft metals can be very difficult to drill and tap.

While not applicable to every end-of-shaft encoder application, the Magnetic Coupling is a handy tool for machine installers, maintenance teams, system integrators and repair shops to keep in their kit.
