Displacement sensors measure the distance an object moves and they can also be used to measure object height and width. There are 2 types of displacement sensors: Contact types, utilizing a dial gage, differential transformer, etc., and non-contact types, utilizing a magnetic field, laser beam, ultra-sonic wave, etc. In general, more accurate and stable measurements can be obtained by increasing the optical path length between the receptor and the light receiving element (CMOS), but this also increases the sensor depth and the sensor body gets bigger.
As compact as a photoelectric sensor, the CMOS laser sensor allows to display actual measured distance as accurately as a displacement sensor. The sensor not only indicates measured values in mm but also produces analog voltage outputs. Various calculations and storage (logging) can be performed when output is taken into a PLC + analog unit.

The HL-G1 series is a compact, self-contained laser displacement sensor that features a built-in controller and digital display. Its miniature size and high-flex cable set allows for usage on a moving apparatus providing high resolution measurement in process level applications.
With available features such as RS-422/RS-485 communication, current and voltage analog signals, and three bi-polar discrete outputs, the HL-G1 series provides a full complement of I/O options.
A built-in digital display allows for complete configuration and programming directly on the unit itself. This eliminates the need for an exclusive controller or other external peripheral.
The HL-G1 series has a compact size of just 60 x 57 x 20.4mm (2.362 x 2.244 x 0.803 in). This equals the size of our previous model, all without the need for a controller. The built-in digital display makes it easy to perform sensor setting while checking displacement values.

Exclusive optical equipment and diaphragm structure sustain laser beam of high quality at a radiant density that is close to ideal in the Gaussian distribution. Emission intensity adjustment function, using the newest algorithm, is able to follow any deviation of the light receiving intensity instantaneously maintaining the best emitting condition at all times.
Ultra high-speed sampling of 100 µs has now been achieved. Thus enabling ultra high-speed measurement of rotating, vibrating and moving objects.
Now available with ultra-precise 1 µm 0.039 mil resolution measurement capability (HL-C105*) and a linearity of ±0.1 % F.S. (for all models). All deficiencies inherent in the conventional PSD sensing method have now been solved.
Whereas the PSD method measures position information from the center of gravity of the total light quantity distribution of the light spots connected along each light element, the linear image sensor method measures the peak position values of the light spots themselves. This advancement now makes high-precision measurement possible, regardless of the surface condition of the object whether for metal hairline surface cracks or for non-reflective black rubber.

Embeddable (shielded) units may be safely flush-mounted in metal. Nonembeddable (nonshielded) units require a metal free area around the sensing face. Because of possible interference of the electromagnetic fields generated by the oscillators, minimum spacing is required between adjacent or opposing sensors. It is good engineering practice to mount sensors horizontally or with the sensing face looking down.
