Combining VARIBLOC and VARIMOT variable speed gear units with all types of reduction gear units within the SEW-EURODRIVE modular concept creates variable speed drives with a low output speed and high output torque. Combining variable speed gearmotors with helical, parallel shaft helical, helical-bevel and helical-worm gear units has proven effective at low speeds. The foot- and flange-mounted versions can also be used to power machines without a reducing gear unit. Speed can be adjusted mechanically, e.g. with a handwheel, or electromechanically using a variable motor. Pole-changing motors can be used to extend the setting range of variable speed gear units.

D series VARIMOT friction disk variable speed gearmotors are intended for power ranges up to 11 kW and speed setting ranges 1:4 or 1:5. The contact pressure between the driving pulley and the friction ring required for torque transmission is set automatically. The speed control can be adjusted even when the gearmotor is at a standstill.

SEW Eurodrive VARIGEAR mechanically-adjustable drives can be combined with a large variety of SEW speed reducers in virtually any system requiring variable speed gearmotors with low output speed and high output torque. They can also be used without reduction as direct machine drives, either in the foot-mounted or flange-mounted configuration. The speed adjustment range of SEW mechanically-adjustable variable-speed gearmotors may be further extended through the use of multi-speed motors.

VU and VZ series VARIBLOC wide V-belt variable speed gearmotors are used in the power range up to 45 kW. Typical speed setting ranges are 1:4, 1:6 and 1:8.
