The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon will introduce its VACON 20 X and VACON 100 X AC drives, specifically designed for solar-powered applications, in the SPS IPC DRIVES ITALIA 2015 fair to be held in Parma, Italy, on 12-14 May 2015. These Vacon AC drives can be used with solar panels in environments where electricity supplies are scarce or unreliable.
The VACON 20 X and VACON 100 X AC drives play an important part in providing electricity from photovoltaic solar panels to the motors running various processes which make the standard of living better. Some of the typical applications include, for instance, water pumps which provide clean water for drinking and cooking or for irrigation; compressors used for refrigeration of food and dairy products as well as other applications including fans for ventilation and air conditioning.

Photovoltaic solar panels absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity which can be used to power electrical devices. Once installed, the system has very low maintenance costs and the solar power is basically available for free.
In addition, solar-powered applications can be used to replace several other solutions that are more expensive, environmentally hazardous or logistically challenging. For example, diesel-driven pumps require fuel to be transported over a certain distance which itself consumes energy. Combustion engines are not that efficient, they require regular maintenance, and used oil and oil filters create hazardous waste.

Protein Boom Boosted by Vacon's AC Drives - Ensuring Quality & Safety at Valio's Dairy Plant in Finland
Global AC drives manufacturer Vacon has delivered over one hundred new-generation VACON 100 AC drives to a quark production line at dairy product manufacturer Valio's plant in Seinäjoki, Western Finland. Vacon's AC drives contribute to the high quality of the production process and compliance with the safety requirements in standards.
Recently, Valio, the market leader in key dairy product groups in Finland, doubled its production capacity at its plant in Seinäjoki to meet the increased demand for quark, a fresh dairy product high in protein. Commissioned in March 2014, the new production line is equipped with one hundred motors which run, for example, the plant's pumps and mixers. These motors are controlled by VACON 100 AC drives in the power range from 1.1 kW to 45 kW. The total power of the AC drives delivered amounts to about 400 kW.
AC drives are most commonly used for pump control, and at the Seinäjoki plant, 80% of the pumps are controlled by AC drives. The AC drive accelerates the pump motor quickly and smoothly to its running speed. A smooth start-up reduces the stress on the electrical network and the pump's mechanical parts, and reduces pressure spikes in the pipeline. The continuous control of the running speed also allows the product's manufacturing process to be optimized. This results in improved reliability and process control.
At Valio's plant in Seinäjoki, the first VACON AC drives were taken into use 17 years ago, in 1997. Vacon's AC drives are mainly used for controlling pumps, mixers and separators but also for controlling e.g. fans, conveyors as well as packing and palletizing machines. In total, Valio's Seinäjoki plant houses approximately 1,000 VACON AC drives.
The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon is in the forefront of complying with the new European energy-efficiency standard EN 50598-2 which will enter into force by the end of this year. Specifically, the standard defines a classification scheme for AC drives. All of Vacon's AC drives comfortably exceed the requirements for the IE2 class, the lowest loss category currently defined.
The European economic strategy program 'Europe 2020' plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent until 2020, and there is another reduction plan for 2030. Standard induction motors alone consume approximately 30% of all the electricity generated in the world. However, the current measures, which just cover the energy efficiency of motors, are not enough to reach this strategy's ambitious goal. The new standard EN 50598-2 looks beyond just the motor, creating unified requirements for the energy efficiency of entire motor-driven systems.
Technically speaking, the EN 50598-2 standard defines a way of calculating the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) for any driven system. The lower the EEI, the more efficient the system is. In defining the overall EEI, two things are considered - the system losses at various working points and the time the system operates at these working points. In order to be able to calculate the total system losses, the EN 50598-2 defines that the losses of the AC drive and motor have to be specified at eight different working points. Vacon provides the losses at the eight points of reference required for the EEI calculation for all of its AC drives.

This is Vacon's most space-saving enclosed drive, consisting of a range of products developed especially with system integrators in mind. The pre-designed and engineered VACON NXP Liquid Cooled Enclosed Drive is robust and ideal for demanding environments and applications where space is at a premium.
Several technical advances and features in the liquid-cooled enclosed drives make them an attractive choice for customers. They do not require any large air-conditioning system, which in turn minimizes the investment cost, brings space and energy savings, and makes it virtually silent. Also all main components such as the filters are liquid cooled as standard.
Vacon has been delivering these drives to several of its system integrator partners. Now this product series will be an official member of Vacon's well-proven portfolio of liquid-cooled AC drives, thus simplifying the order and delivery process to customers and increasing the company's capability to serve a wide range of industries and applications.

VACON 100 FLOW combines the core design of VACON 100 with dedicated functions that can benefit flow control processes. The new AC drive also improves the efficiency and redundancy of pump systems, offering advanced features such as Multimaster and Multifollower for controlling multiple pumps simultaneously.

AC drive manufacturer Vacon will announce a new product family of compact AC drives at the electric automation fair SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2011 in Nuremberg, Germany on 22 November 2011. Optimized for the needs of original equipment manufacturers, the new product range further strengthens Vacon's foothold in this high-volume AC drive market.
Vacon will introduce three new products: Vacon 10, Vacon 20 and Vacon 20 Cold Plate. The existing Vacon 10, available in the power range of 0.25-5.5 kW, has a re-designed user interface and more functionality. The brand new Vacon 20, available from 0.25 to 18.5 kW, is a real workhorse which offers high performance and excellent tailorability. The new Vacon 20 Cold Plate, available from 0.75 to 7.5 kW, shares all the features of the Vacon 20. It is designed to allow OEMs to create the optimum cooling solution for the drive.
The new product range has been designed to meet the various needs of OEMs all over the world. Efficient volume manufacturing is possible as the AC drives are fast to install and easy to set up. Also, the products can be modified and tailored to the needs of the customer. The Vacon 20 series incorporates a built-in programmable logic (PLC) functionality which conforms to the IEC61131-3 standard. In addition, the functionality can be extended via optional modules such as a wide variety of fieldbus cards, and tools for easy parameter copying from one unit to another.
There has been public discussion about the Stuxnet computer malware and its impact on the operation of Vacon AC drives. This is why Vacon wants to clarify the situation.
Vacon has been investigating the matter and, according to its present knowledge, Stuxnet is not capable of infecting Vacon AC drives in any way. Nor does Vacon know of any instances where Stuxnet would have created problems in the operations of Vacon's customers. In this respect the processes of Vacon's customers are not at risk.
According to experts, Stuxnet seems to be capable of infecting one manufacturer's certain programmable logic controllers (PLCs) which in turn can be used to control the operation of Vacon AC drives. An infected PLC may operate defectively and thus control the operation of Vacon AC drives in an unwanted manner. Therefore, customers who suspect that their processes might be infected by the Stuxnet malware should contact their PLC provider.
The malware is activated in the infected PLC when very specific conditions are all true at the same time, including an extremely high output frequency. Therefore, any possible effects would concern extremely limited and targeted AC drives application areas. Vacon's experts have not found in their own investigations a single potential case where all the conditions of the malware would be fulfilled.
In addition, because there has been incorrect or inaccurate information in some Internet-based sources regarding Vacon's sales of AC drives to Iran, Vacon wants to emphasize the fact that Vacon has not sold AC drives to Iran against the embargo.
Vacon takes this matter seriously and continues to study the potential impact of Stuxnet. Vacon will also keep its customers, partners and all other relevant stakeholders informed whenever new important information arises.
Vacon has now completed the acquisition of TB Wood's AC drives business, initially announced on December 19, 2007. The acquired business will be incorporated into Vacon's consolidated financial statements as from the beginning of January 2008. The acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on Vacon Group's earnings per share in 2008 and 2009.

The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon and international glass technology company Glaston have signed an agreement on Vacon AC drive deliveries for Glaston's glass tempering machines worldwide. The contract extends to the end of the year 2012 and will cover powers from 110 kilowatts up to 1,000 kilowatts.
Glaston uses Vacon's AC drives as a component in their glass tempering machines where high-power fans quickly cool down the surface of hot glass. Different kinds of glass require different kinds of cooling-down processes. In this process, top-class performance is required from the AC drive to ensure optimum quality.
Vacon AC drives will be delivered primarily to Glaston's factories in Finland, China and Brazil. During the agreement period the total number of AC drives to be globally delivered is annually 100-150, covering a wide array of Vacon products.
