Spring-applied brakes and permanent magnet brakes belong to the most widespread safety brakes for elevators, suspension tracks, wind turbines as well as in robotics and mechanical engineering. In consequence of their functionality each principle has characteristic properties which predestine them for different application areas.
Permanent magnet brakes are holding brakes with emergency stop function. They convince through high torques in relation to their size (power density), operation without wearing or residual torque, short switching times and zero backlash. For this reason, permanent magnet brakes are particularly suitable for servo motors, for example in industrial handling and robotics.
In contrast, spring-applied brakes are characterised by high admissible braking energies per braking process as well as high braking work during the entire service life. Their complexity is low, the installation is easy and the price is also comparatively low. So they are predestined for many standard applications; particularly for applications that require maximum brake energy and high braking work throughout the service life.
Since very different aspects need to be considered for the selection of the right brake, the user should rely on competent consultation. In this conjunction it is advantageous if the brake manufacturer can provide both principles. Consequently, it can be guaranteed that the brake is optimally adapted to the application.
